From day one the fantastic Seaport location, its fishing history, and the culinary focus of Hook + Line brought us great design inspiration. So we set out to build a material palette that balanced the grit of the fishing industry…
A WELCOME ADDITION
Every home is a living object, and we love nothing more than to see a property grow and evolve over time! So, when a past client reached out to say that the modest riverfront home, we designed for them had become over the years a sanctuary not just for them, but for their adult children, grandchildren, and many friends, we were thrilled to help them figure out solutions to accommodate their loved ones. They didn’t want to reign in their hospitality but needed a little more separation from the numerous guests visiting the home.

ACCESSORY DWELLING UNIT SOLUTION
With the help of the renowned landscape architect, Doug Reed of Reed Hilderbrand, they reconceived the inland side of the property to include a formal grassy “green” and kitchen garden adjacent to an enlarged gravel parking court seated below a line of shady maples. Positioned prominently at one end of the green and parking court are two new “outbuildings” that formally define the edges of both spaces.
One outbuilding serves as an ADU (Accessory Dwelling Unit) for guests and stands as a minimalist cube in the landscape, mimicking the clean rectangular form of the main house. Clad in tongue and groove cedar and punctuated with windows, the cozy quarters provide the perfect mix of privacy and visual connection to the landscape and views.

INDOOR-OUTDOOR CONNECTION
The northwestern corner features large, glazed openings to provide a visual connection out to the Westport River beyond. At less than 500 square feet, the space is organized efficiently to accommodate living and sleeping areas, a kitchenette, plenty of storage, and a full bathroom including an outdoor shower. The other cedar-shingled outbuilding in the landscape serves as a garage and workshop for the Owner, a retired general contractor.

While these outbuildings serve as landscape focal points, they are much more than garden follies. They are part of the evolution of the property and enable the Owners to continue to make memories in the lovely Westport River setting in the company of those most important to them.
